Break Time

I have taken a break form nomidazolam, mainly because, contrary to the opinions of medical minions, yes I DO get to call the shots.  (clever pun)  I have not only forced the medical minions to do as I say, but I have also successfully argued that by signing a blank (as in zero information) "consent to treat" they are violating my RIGHT to informed consent.  After a few rounds and some phone calls, I have received treatment WITHOUT signing away my rights.

Now that that is out of the way, I demanded that they put INTO MY MEDICAL RECORDS that "under no circumstances" am I to be given Versed.  Part of it is that I'm adamant that not a drop of that substance is to be injected into me.  The other part is where I tried to kill the nurses while under the influence of their drug from HELL!  That makes them kinda nervous, so they do as I say, and since it's all documented in my patient charts, even the EMT's won't try any funny stuff.  I'm so sweet when I get my way.

Nothing my writer says is a shock to me.  Versed/Midazolam can absolutely be used to murder (excuse me, euthanize) people.  Remember that lawsuit brought by convicted killers on death row here in the States?  The murderers claimed that using Versed constituted "cruel and unusual punishment."  While I have no sympathy for these violent killers, I do have sympathy for INNOCENT LIVES lost (daily ?) due to the use of this chemical.

The paranoia, crazy dreams, tension and forgetfulness among other side effects weren't discussed before my procedure. I'm just glad the hallucinations stopped. No one told me they would be chatting to me about various things for 50 minutes, all of which would end up being forgotten. I am a very private person, don't use facebook and already had a distrust of people due to past problems. I'll never go back for any more tests which means I'll never get to the bottom of the problem I've been having for 6+ years with loss of blood when I use the toilet, so much so that I need iron infusions. The specialists were getting fed up with how long its taking and I think after they learn of the phobia to tests I've developed, they will stop giving me iron altogether. They did keep saying they were sick of filling a bucket that has a hole in it. Unfortunately when this bucket gets kicked, there wont be a replacement.

If these symptoms persist I fear my life's pursuit of electronics and computers will be destroyed. I wrote programs and built electronic devices with PIC chips for fun. Now I can't motivate myself which is out of character for me. One strange thing is that I tried to get motivation to make some music, which I did but my style is different now, possibly better. Not the result I was looking for when I went in for my examination.
BTW I think everyone should have the right to CONTROL what is done to them. If that's being a freak then so be it. If people choose to give up control then the doctors should let them make an informed decision."

I am so sorry this happened.  It actually does get better, but it takes YEARS.  Some of it, like the extreme anxiety about medical procedures doesn't really get better, but for the inappropriate rage, insomnia etc. that does significantly decline over time.  That doesn't help NOW, but it will get better.  My own daughter has a bright line of demarcation between before Versed mommy and after Versed mommy.  She survived it.  Talk about it.  Apologize.  Yes a brief time with Versed can cause problems for years.  It IS the drug, it IS the complete and total disregard for you as a person by the medical field that traumatized you.  

Try a supplement called Prevagen.  I take it every day.  I used Lexapro for a while for acute episodes.  Thanks for writing.  Hopefully your story will help others.

First, before I lambaste this statement, thanks for actually using a name Lance.  

Lance, Propofol is certainly NOT in the same class of drugs as Versed.  Versed is a benzodiazepine.  Propofol is not.  Propofol is in its own class.  I see that you have tried to obfuscate the issue by conflating USES of a drug, like anesthesia, with the CLASS of drug.  Yes Propofol is used in anesthesia.  Yes Propofol is considered a "sedation" drug and also a "general anesthesia" drug, just like Versed, but it is not in the Benzo class.  It isn't a benzo.

Propofol certainly does have the same precautions.  It's a powerful drug and can KILL YOU if used inappropriately, just like Versed.  The problems you speak of do not include the same rebound anxiety and the other mental problems that Versed causes.  The two drugs are entirely different.  It isn't fair to sweep every drug up into the "sedative-hypnotic" category and pretend that they are in any way similar other than method of action.  

Just In...

Here is yet another erudite post from a reader.  He/she opines that regardless if we suffer from side effects, since we have no medical training, we are not competent to judge whether we like the drug or not.  Sooo, if we are not educated enough to dislike the side effects of a particular drug, then does it follow that deleterious side effects are not reported?  After all, who are we to judge, we are suffering, but it has no meaning because we aren't in the medical field.  Wow.  That's some logic.  The post is also heavy on gratuitous insults as usual. Really, is this how a well reasoned argument reads?

Midazolam and Murder on TV

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, episode 25 has a plot which involves a murderer using Versed/Midazolam.  The exact same drug that your friendly medical providers will tell you is simply a little sedative.  Something to make you happy and relaxed.  If Versed/Midazolam is innocuous, why then are television shows using it as the method their fictional homicidal characters use to gain compliance?  They aren't using Fentanyl or Valium.  They are rightly demonizing Versed/Midazolam along with the killers.

Does it make you feel better that Midazolam is only available through a prescription?  Are hospitals et al lax with Versed/Midazolam because they believe their own hype about how "safe" this drug is?  It's very disturbing how many nefarious uses this drug has, not just in a medical setting where Versed is used to extract secrets from patients or so the medical staff can indulge in a little torture under the premise that the patient won't remember it anyway.  Murder, rape, torture, legal lethal injections, forced confessions, all using Versed.


Whether it's murder or unintentional (iatrogenic) harm this drug has no place in a civilized society, in my opinion.  Hopefully as professional writers use this drug in their plots, public awareness will cause people in the medical field to rethink their use of this poison. Maybe the FDA can step in and reexamine their sanguine attitude towards Versed?  I would like to see it banned.

So, since I had a very bad experience with an immoral, untrained, arrogant, lunatic of a crna wielding a syringe of Versed, because he relied on an evil amnesia drug with KNOWN SEVERE SIDE EFFECTS to hide his lack of skill in pain relief, I am pretending to be an MD, I'm an anti-vaxxer (used as a pejorative) and haven't been to college.  Judging by the poster's lack of skill in either presenting his/her side of the argument, or writing a cogent sentence, I would have to say that this person is an uneducated rube.  God help us if he/she has access to Versed and helpless, trusting patients.

The ID channel

I watch the ID channel frequently and this jewel came up.  "Death and the Dentist" on 48 Hours ID.  Guess which drug was used to kill this man?  Imagine that.  Not only is this drug Versed/Midazolam used in death row inmates' lethal cocktail, but used for straight up murder as well.  Ever wonder how many hospital deaths can be attributed to Versed?

Some Sage Advice From a Reader.

I would walk out on pangolin, but only after making my recording of her "speil" and being sure to publish it on youtube. After all, I can choose to/not to do that with my own HIPPA info. Since I am in a single consent state that "dr" would never know it was recorded. I have taken to recording EVERY visit to any practitioner's office. 

If after I refused a med/procedure, I was pressured any further with any sort of their threat/scare tactics/falsified docs my first stop out the door would be my lawyers office (again). It is strangely satisfying to hear them backtrack once they find out about the existence of a recording. History has proven to me that their insurance company just asks how much to settle, and won't defend them at all. By the way, making recordings was a recommendation of a neurologist-friend who refuses any versed-like medications for himself and family. 

Easiest way to deal with these drug pushers/patient abusers is to cost them money, lots of money. It works, and it is the only way we, as patients can enforce our rights. There are lots of good doctors, and there is absolutely no reason to put up with the bad ones like the "anesthesiologist" above.

The current recommendation in the anesthesia community is avoiding benzos in patients over the age of 65-70. I personally don't give them at all unless a patient is so nervous they are crying and shaking, and even then I will try something else first. Cardiologists, gastroenterologists, etc. don't have the luxury of administering propofol because of safety and liability issues, so they use benzos and narcotics for sedation.

I am encouraged by this person's comment.  I hope that the age of the patient is lowered until the drug, Versed, isn't used. I do understand the problem with using Propofol in a setting without properly trained and extremely vigilant medical personnel who are properly equipped for emergencies. However, the medical field has ignored the problems with Versed because they are telling us and themselves that Versed is "just like Valium."  It isn't.  Valium is Valium and Versed is Versed.  The chemical construction is different, the amount of drug that is fatal is different, and the effects are different.  

I have found that Fentanyl as sole agent, isn't only a painkiller many times more effective than Morphine, it is also a sedative.  The real kind which ameliorates pain, and as a side effect calms the patient.  Not everybody likes Fentanyl, but for me, this is what I want.  I agree with the anesthetists assessment, with the exception of the age.  I think the cutoff age should be much lower.

Even with all the bald-faced LIES that are told by medical minions about this poison, people are starting to get the idea.  Why is there no outrage over a lethal injection drug being used on innocent patients?  What did they ever do wrong to deserve the torture?

Two words:  CONSCIOUS SEDATION  It means, boys and girls that you are conscious, awake and aware, unable to defend yourself or stop the procedure.  The "sedation" part is debatable.  Since when is amnesia (they hope) a part of sedation?  Oh yeah, the minute they came up with this diabolical drug.   Since when does getting a sedative involve skyrocketing blood pressure and elevated heart rate?  Call my crazy but the physiological changes are the result of fear, anger, and pain, not relaxation.  As I have previously noted, Aaron, my little anesthesia nurse stated that I was "very relaxed."  No, you cretin, I wasn't "relaxed.  I was seething with anger, absolutely furious that he had incapacitated me in such a sneaky way.  I was INCAPACITATED, not "relaxed."

Anyway, I hope that more and more people gain awareness of the troubling nature of Versed/Midazolam and confront those who use it against ALL of us, not just the murderous thugs sentenced to die.

Propofol: the Lesser of the Evils

I wrote about the miracle of Propofol and want to talk about that a little bit more.  Propofol was a miracle drug for my daughter.  Would I allow Propofol to be used on me?  Maybe, maybe not.

I have read way too many articles talking about the "patient cooperation" with Propofol.  To me, that doesn't sound like "asleep."  Sorry, I find that disturbing, especially after the Versed debacle.  The "amnesia" didn't work for me with Versed and the absolute HORROR of being unable to move or speak efficiently and the crawling subservience to the medical minions every whim was more than I could deal with.  If I could describe the level of freakiness for you I would.  Follow that with waking up from the general anesthesia I had FORBIDDEN, on my feet trying to kill people with my cast, I have a very deep issue with any drug which renders you obedient, incapable of stopping the procedure and which produces a profound personality change.  Since NOBODY will tell the truth about these drugs, I have a hard time swallowing the happy clouds descriptions.  "Superior patient cooperation with Propofol" comes close to sounding like Versed, only worse.

I saw the results of using Propofol on my daughter and it was an incredible drug.  Would it be safe for me and others who have already had a problem with Versed?  I-don't-know.  Depending on the medical issue, if Propofol were the least of the anesthesia options I would choose it.  MAC is out of the question as is general anesthetic.  I have had very good results from regional blocks without sedation so that would be MY first choice.  Performed by a doctor of course.  For more invasive procedures which cannot be performed with a block, then Propofol.  The thing is, for people like me, all this sedation, MAC and general anesthetic is complete overkill.  Why would we need all this crap for some minor procedure?  It boggles the mind.

I would accept Propofol as a last resort only.

PS  After the debacle with my distal radius fracture (see the "vast improvement" in the x-rays, which is actually minuscule. Keep in mind that I reduced that fracture on my own before I ever saw a doctor...) If I had the same fracture as my daughter, here is my plan...I would tie a rope around my wrist, then shut a door over the other end of the rope about shoulder height and pull until I could tease the widely displaced ends of the bones together again.  The roughness of the fracture will help hold the bone ends together.  A nice brace to hold that shoulder back until it healed and voila, problem solved.  If you can't handle that, Propofol might be a good choice so the medical people can fix it for you.

Obamacare Again

Obamacare is an unmitigated disaster for people like me.  In order to supply insurance for the few, the many have to pay for insurance they can't use.  Don't believe me?  Look at the numbers.  The "Patent Predation and Unaffordable Care Act" has allegedly insured 15 million people.  How wonderful.  Out of 315+ million people, but at what cost?

My premium, paid by my employer in lieu of wages, is $9.84 per hour.  Let that sink in.  My health care premium is more than minimum wage.  It amounts to at least $400 per WEEK!  It continues to go up, 6-8% a year and the deductable is up over 1100% since this monstrosity was passed.  The more the premium is, the less money I take home.  This premium now swallows almost 1/3 of my hourly wage.  What do you think I get for this expensive coverage? (besides getting to subsidize the people on Obamacare)

I have a new $500 per person per year deductable out the gate, per calendar year, before the plan pays anything.  There are three of us, so a maximum of $1500 per year deductable before anything gets paid.  This is new this year.  It had been an 80/20 split until the NEXT deductable was met.

The next deductable is $5,000 per person per year, but they don't call it a deductable this year.  This year it's called "co-insurance."  The plan brags that this is payable through the 80/20 split.  The fact is, one visit to the emergency room will result in a $5,000 "co-insurance" payment, after the initial $500 "deductable".   So $5,000 per person per year and the $500 per person per year.  $5,500 dollars per person or $16,500 for the family.  There are lots of exclusions, so this number will be higher if we have a catastrophe or a serious of medical events.  On Jan 1 all of this resets.  I don't make the kind of money where this is in any way "affordable."  Especially not after the premiums are taken out of my check.

About that "co-insurance" in the previous paragraph...  Know what "co-insurance" is?  It's patient responsibility.  In the new American way, words and meaning are changed to suit whomever is trying to obfuscate the issue.  *I* am now an insurer.  I am curious as to what that designation is designed to do?  Is it simply to deflect or is it something more sinister?  As a "co-insurer" are there going to be tax issues in the future?  Am I going to be forced to have "capital" for my (co)insurance company or face fines, fees and penalties?  More forms to fill out?

So I have this fine, expensive insurance which is basically a major medical plan that I can't afford to use.  The government is salivating over the luscious taxes they can impose because of the "in lieu of wages" designation.  Now I wonder if the "co-insurance"verbiage will create new problems for me? With my salary, after all the bums get through with it, puts me at 130% of poverty level.  Slightly more than half my income goes for taxes and health care.

Maybe somebody can explain how this can be called a "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act." Can the Obamacare people use their insurance?   Or are we all forced to pay for insurance we can't use, to bail out the health care industry?

No one tried to put anything into my IV prior to going to the OR, and in the OR, clearly visible to all, was a huge white board with my medical history listed.  In the middle of the white board, in big letters, was "ALLERGIES - VERSED".  The feeling of relief I had seeing those two words was indescribable. 

The surgery went well and I am now recovering.  I was very lucky to have the Anesthesiologist I had for this surgery."

Propofol

My daughter broke her collar bone 6 weeks ago.  As you can imagine, she was terrified that I would let them give her Versed OR that the anesthesia provider would simply defy me and give it to her anyway.  She had to deal with me for several years after my debacle with Aaron, the crna who gave me Versed against my will and against my instructions.  She was afraid that would happen to her...

First she witnessed me refusing to sign the intake documents.  As I have admonished people, take the time to read the contract.  Since this IS a contract it is within your rights to strike whatever it is that they want permission for.  In this case it was a blanket consent to allow anybody they chose to do whatever they wanted, in direct violation of informed consent law.  Never give up all control and your rights as required by law by signing anything of the sort.  Then I quickly crossed out any consent for video recording the procedure.  NO!  So the witch (with a "b") said that they would not perform the surgery if I didn't sign the paper without any alterations.  The fight was on.

In those documents, there are phone numbers which I began calling.  I am not forced to sign a blanket consent before treatment.  An "informed consent" is different.  That one has details in it REQUIRED BY LAW and also REQUIRED BY LAW is your right to refuse any part of the proposed treatment. That doesn't come with a caveat, sign this or else.  That is coercion and is specifically forbidden BY LAW.  I did get hold of somebody who wasn't such an idiot (and had some authority) and ran down the abusive, arrogant and dismissive behavior of the intake minion.  Problem solved.  I simply said that their intake form was unacceptable, illegal and it would be irresponsible of me to sign it.  The hospital took the offending document, with my lines and scrawls and without my signature and we proceeded.

It is YOUR RIGHT to have an actual doctor instead of an anesthesia nurse.  You may demand that.  I did.  While I was discussing my daughter's anesthesia with the anesthesiologist, a crna popped into the room (he had a name tag which described his lowly role) and I hissed at him and held up the universal sign of getting rid of a vampire, in his face.  You know the one where you form your index fingers into the sign of the cross?  He disappeared instantly.  Thanks little crna.  I'm glad you didn't stay and fight with me.  Maybe he didn't like me mentioning Aaron's (the crna which caused my problem) full name?  Whatever, he left precipitously.  Maybe he was a nice guy, he might have been professional and respected our wishes, but judging by Aaron's treatment of me and the scornful way the crna's who come here have treated me, I won't take any chances.

With the exception of the original intake person, everybody else was accommodating and very pleasant.  They defused what could have been a major ordeal and I was very pleased.

I spent my time praying in the chapel while my daughter was in surgery.  I'm an agnostic, so this is unusual behavior for me.  Finally the surgeon called me on my cell phone.  So with great trepidation I walked to the doorway of my kid's recovery room.  OMG you'd think she never had surgery!  She was talking and laughing with her nurse, was able to walk to the bathroom unassisted (you have to before they let you out) and in general she was bright and chipper. It was UNBELIEVABLE. Seriously like a miracle.  I am not exaggerating at all.  It was like nothing ever happened.

So what did the anesthesiologist and I agree upon?  Not GA.  Not Versed.  Not a dangerous regional block. (interscalene)  Propofol.  Nothing but Propofol.  Now the kidlet's clavicle is in place with a plate and a bunch of screws and she is back competing on her horse.  The one that fell down with her and broke her collar bone in the first place.  (Another story.) She won the novice division at a schooling event a few weeks later.

Do not be afraid.  If I can do this, get control of medical treatment, so can you.
