I contacted you last year about how I've had colonoscopies
without sedation and how, to me, they are painless. I wanted to relate to you a
surprising experience I had this past Friday.
On Friday, I had joint
replacement surgery on the big toe of my right foot. My doctor told me she
normally does this surgery under MAC. So, I was prepared for the usual fight
about no Versed with the Anesthesiologist. However, the Anesthesiologist spoke
with me for a very long time, listening to my concerns and history. He
recommended, based on my history, GA, and he absolutely assured me that Versed
would not be used.
No one tried to put anything into my IV prior to
going to the OR, and in the OR, clearly visible to all, was a huge white board
with my medical history listed. In the middle of the white board, in big
letters, was "ALLERGIES - VERSED". The feeling of relief I had seeing those two
words was indescribable.
The surgery went well and I am now
recovering. I was very lucky to have the Anesthesiologist I had for this
surgery."

Propofol
My daughter broke her collar bone 6 weeks ago. As you can imagine, she was terrified that I would let them give her Versed OR that the anesthesia provider would simply defy me and give it to her anyway. She had to deal with me for several years after my debacle with Aaron, the crna who gave me Versed against my will and against my instructions. She was afraid that would happen to her...
First she witnessed me refusing to sign the intake documents. As I have admonished people, take the time to read the contract. Since this IS a contract it is within your rights to strike whatever it is that they want permission for. In this case it was a blanket consent to allow anybody they chose to do whatever they wanted, in direct violation of informed consent law. Never give up all control and your rights as required by law by signing anything of the sort. Then I quickly crossed out any consent for video recording the procedure. NO! So the witch (with a "b") said that they would not perform the surgery if I didn't sign the paper without any alterations. The fight was on.
In those documents, there are phone numbers which I began calling. I am not forced to sign a blanket consent before treatment. An "informed consent" is different. That one has details in it REQUIRED BY LAW and also REQUIRED BY LAW is your right to refuse any part of the proposed treatment. That doesn't come with a caveat, sign this or else. That is coercion and is specifically forbidden BY LAW. I did get hold of somebody who wasn't such an idiot (and had some authority) and ran down the abusive, arrogant and dismissive behavior of the intake minion. Problem solved. I simply said that their intake form was unacceptable, illegal and it would be irresponsible of me to sign it. The hospital took the offending document, with my lines and scrawls and without my signature and we proceeded.
It is YOUR RIGHT to have an actual doctor instead of an anesthesia nurse. You may demand that. I did. While I was discussing my daughter's anesthesia with the anesthesiologist, a crna popped into the room (he had a name tag which described his lowly role) and I hissed at him and held up the universal sign of getting rid of a vampire, in his face. You know the one where you form your index fingers into the sign of the cross? He disappeared instantly. Thanks little crna. I'm glad you didn't stay and fight with me. Maybe he didn't like me mentioning Aaron's (the crna which caused my problem) full name? Whatever, he left precipitously. Maybe he was a nice guy, he might have been professional and respected our wishes, but judging by Aaron's treatment of me and the scornful way the crna's who come here have treated me, I won't take any chances.
With the exception of the original intake person, everybody else was accommodating and very pleasant. They defused what could have been a major ordeal and I was very pleased.
I spent my time praying in the chapel while my daughter was in surgery. I'm an agnostic, so this is unusual behavior for me. Finally the surgeon called me on my cell phone. So with great trepidation I walked to the doorway of my kid's recovery room. OMG you'd think she never had surgery! She was talking and laughing with her nurse, was able to walk to the bathroom unassisted (you have to before they let you out) and in general she was bright and chipper. It was UNBELIEVABLE. Seriously like a miracle. I am not exaggerating at all. It was like nothing ever happened.
So what did the anesthesiologist and I agree upon? Not GA. Not Versed. Not a dangerous regional block. (interscalene) Propofol. Nothing but Propofol. Now the kidlet's clavicle is in place with a plate and a bunch of screws and she is back competing on her horse. The one that fell down with her and broke her collar bone in the first place. (Another story.) She won the novice division at a schooling event a few weeks later.
Do not be afraid. If I can do this, get control of medical treatment, so can you.

Here's Yet Another Drug to Decline!
The medical minions will not rest until they get the opportunity to destroy our minds. They want to use Midazolam for every little thing, have authorized it in nasal spray form and syrup. People may now purchase the drug (with a prescription) at the drug store and keep it in their houses. Many seniors go straight from their little "sedation" episode to an old folks home, with their brain destroyed, just like the medical people want. Now this...

The base drug is still a benzo. It acts on the same receptors. The medical minions claim that patients "recover" faster, but are these patients hooked up to an EEG machine? It amazes me what passes for "recovery" when these benzos are used. You are awake the whole time, talking incessantly for the amusement of staff. How do they know that the patients have recovered their BRAIN FUNCTION? When they stop babbling? I will be adding this drug Remimazolam to my list of drugs that will NOT be given to my family or me, under any circumstances or for any reason.
Since I was told by an anesthesiologist that since I hadn't said "under any circumstances" and I hadn't NAMED the drug Versed, that they felt sanguine about giving me a drug that I had declined with my "Don't give me any drug that will incapacitate me" directions. I thought I was pretty clear, but apparently patients need to spell it out for these people.

Dentist Arrested On Charges
A New York dentist was accused of rape and aggravated sexual abuse, stemming from giving a 16 year old "some type of anesthesia" and then raping her. Now, what "anesthesia" do they use in dentists offices? Novocaine wouldn't incapacitate the girl, so, let me guess: VERSED! The girl stated that "the effects of the anesthesia were strong enough to render her helpless.." He beat that rap only to be arrested again.

Another Anesthesia Person Found Guilty
There has been a spate of anesthesia types being convicted of sex crimes lately. Here is one from Toronto. He was CONVICTED of sexually molesting 21 that's TWENTY-ONE female patients that we know about. He simply "sedated" them and then had them perform oral sex on him, among other things. At least he's off the streets of Canada now.
Still feel safe when some medical person wants to give you a nice needle full of Versed? Want to give your (in this case creepy) anesthesia provider a blow job while you are not aware of it? This is how Versed works. You remain awake and alert to all outside observers and are extremely obedient. You can and will do all kinds of things and remain unaware of it because your brain has been disconnected from your memory banks. This drug is NOT necessary. Ever wonder why the medical people won't let you decline it? Hmmmm. Well, here's just one thing they don't want you to remember, but need you to be able to follow orders...

Once again we have somebody, presumably a medical person, telling us that if we refuse the Versed, we will be subjected to torture and nothing else can or will be used to ameliorate the pain in what appears to be a painful, though unnamed, procedure. I can assure you that colonoscopies do NOT include sawing off the heads of bones. According to this commenter, nothing but Versed can/will be used, no Propofol, no G/A drugs, no Fentanyl, nothing. Does that sound right to you?
Can you imagine being cut open and the head of a bone sawed off with just an unpredictable amnesia drug? What if, like me, you don't get amnesia? It curdles my blood to think about it, yet this is what the commenter would have us believe. It's either take the amnesia drug to (maybe) scramble the delicate processes of your brain while they do this, or you decide NOT to have the amnesia drug and they do this to you just the same. Whether it works or not, they have no way of knowing. The staff doesn't want you suing them for their inhumane treatment, so they give you amnesia, but not pain relief apparently. Right. How stupid do you think I am?
Even if this kind of surgery were done with ONLY Versed, it would still be for the staff's convenience, not the patients'. They wouldn't want you to REMEMBER how vicious they are and how they tortured you without relief, but they still want to torture you, according to this poster. The pain you suffer through is the same whether they give you amnesia or not. Why is this fact so routinely dismissed? Versed has ZERO pain relief properties, in fact studies have shown that patients actually feel pain more acutely with Versed in their brain. It's called CONSCIOUS, as in awake and aware (see the commenter's lie above) and able to feel pain, SEDATION for a reason. So Versed use in this scenario is ONLY for the benefit of the staff, the claims of this poster not-withstanding.

Videotaping: The New Breach of Patient Privacy
I have often spoken of the downside of Versed. The immoral breaching of patient privacy, inside their own mind even. Right on the heels of this comes videotaping, the new way to breach patient privacy as shown in this article.
Hospital in Secret Video Drama Offers Apology | Medpage Today
First we have the immoral use of Versed for the entertainment of the staff, wherein one injection can lead to many happy hours of eliciting the private thoughts of patients. Then we have videotaping of same. The prominent hospital near me actually had as part of the admissions paperwork, a little blurb about me allowing them to videotape my procedure "for training purposes" and other uses. NOT ON YOUR LIFE! While *I* would like a video of the procedure to monitor my "teams'" behavior, if I were to need general anesthetic, I would never consent to any medical minion or entity having a copy.
While patients need to know exactly what is going on in these surgical suites, what we do not need is videotaping of ourselves in our most vulnerable moments being disseminated as was done in the above link. Nothing is sacred any more, there are no depths to which you "caregivers" will not stoop. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, allow a medical entity to take away your "right" to privacy. Do not sign any document giving them permission to film you. Just because it is hidden in the intake paperwork, you don't have to sign it. Strike the verbiage from the consent form and have them initial it. Get a copy IMMEDIATELY of any paperwork that you have signed. It's the law. Any legal document that you sign MUST be given to you and that's what a consent to treat is. Then if something like happened in the California hospital mentioned in the article happens to YOU, you will have a legal leg to stand on and can sue the dog snot out of them.
Please make sure to read your intake forms and the "informed consent" BEFORE you sign it. Strike anything you don't like, and there will be some things that you find objectionable. Lists of things to deny are in this blog elsewhere. You have that right. Take care of your most precious assets, your body and mind. These are YOURS, not the medical behemoth's. It's time we take back our rights to our own bodies and our own private thoughts.
